Hollywood Star Tilda Swinton Supports Greenlaw Town Hall Restoration Campaign!
‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ star Tilda Swinton has spoken out in support of Greenlaw Town Hall’s restoration campaign. Swinton said ‘As a child brought up in the Borders, Greenlaw Town Hall was probably the first properly grand public building I remember driving past. I remember being in it - about ten years ago - when it was an antiques store.
‘In my opinion, the restoration of this beautiful and elegant building, right in the heart of the town of Greenlaw, and, as such, at the heart of the Borders, would be a vibrant reminder to all of us - not least architects and those that fund modern architecture - that making something living and civic and functional need not mean making it hideous and soulless, just as a grand old beauty of a structure such as is Greenlaw Town Hall need not necessarily sit empty and useless and decaying.
'It was built to be useful: this is no vain folly, but a public piece of elegance meant for the appreciation of all. It deserves the respect of being made useful again, just as we deserve buildings that are good for the soul as well as practical for our lives.’
Borders raised Tilda Swinton is known for taking parts in unusual and arthouse films, as well as for starring in blockbusters ‘The Beach’ with Leonardo Di Caprio, ‘Vanilla Sky’ with Tom Cruise, and ‘Constantine’ with Keanu Reeves. In 2005 she starred as Jadis, the White Witch, in ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’.
